earth hour 2009 - manila

it was another great moment to participate in this year's Earth Hour movement. we were at SM Mall of Asia, the world's fourth largest mall last night to witness one of the most significant hour this year.just recently, Earth Hour ranked the Philippines as the highest in terms of the number of cities registered to participate in this advocacy. see the official news from Earth Hour here.i was with friends Nadz and Calay as early as 5:30pm and so i had the chance to see the event area hours before the culminating global event. the main stage was set infront of the mall's globe structure.we had our dinner and arrived at the area just in time for the Earth Hour. the program was broadcast live through Studio 23 simultaneously with other cities like Cebu and Davao.the countdown was led by the mayors of the cities of Manila, Paranaque and Pasay. people were festively shouting when the lights turned off. moving neon lights dominated the area.a neon version of "pandango sa ilaw" opened the event's hour as performed by the Philippines' most prestiged cultural dance company. followed by Gary Valenciano's performance and ending with Lea Salonga singing two beautiful songs.i went around the mall during that hour and majority of the lights were turned off except for a few restaurants who reduced their light source.when the last minutes were coming, people were again cheering as the countdown ended with confettis popping out at the center stage. photos below shows the last few seconds until the turning on of the lights.it was a great moment to know that more and more people and countries support the Earth Hour movement. thanks to all those who participated and supported one of this year's most important hour.let it not be a temporary action, but instead serve as an awareness to conserve energy everyday.

>uncleawang, it's great to know that you also had events to support earth hour.

>oman, great! galing ng pagsingit mo ng earth hour ah. nasa moa kami kahapon hindi natuloy yung baler kasi mostly hindi available at na0invite ako sa isang event. that's on my next post.

>hi dylan, definitely. as long as you left all the lights off. thanks for taking part.

>hi twin, thanks!

>punky, go figure. hehehe...

>hi alicesg, according to some people, the rule was just to turn off the light. so you participated well. although including the appliances could have been better.

>hi nyl, it's really good to know that thru this we can be united. thanks for supporting earth hour.

Galing talaga kapag sama-sama. Sana patulou ito hindi lang isang oras di ba? Yung gospel kanina is The hour of Jesus.

dati akong nagwowork sa MOA ang naranasan ko na rin jan yung earth hour, year 2007. I guess hindi pa earth hour ang tawag dyan., ganda naman ng kuha sa MOA. hehehe

so cool ei!!!

happy earth day =)

Sorry if I'm cynical about this event. Nagpatay nga ng ilaw pero may broadcast? Duh. Di ba mas makonsumo ng kuryente o generator (gasolina) yun?

Reena said...

this is actually disappointing. :( don't get me wrong. my family participated. but i just think the event and the reason for this cause didn't reach every household. kulang actually sa info drive eh. if not for my friends in wwf, i wouldn't have known about this. (peace tayo wwf friends!)

in my neighborhood, we're the only house that participated. shucks. and none of my friends actually knew about this!

ayan novela na to.

nice shirt...

Great shots from earth hour in Manila. My city participated too this year. I don't think they did last year, although I did.

Hmmm... not sure it helps to save the planet... but it is good that people start to be aware of the problem.

What about a day without waste... (thrown on the streets)?

Nice coverage...not easy to shoot in the dark !

I switched of the lights...but I need to confess I kept my PC on... imagine how addicted I am... :-(

sheng said...

I did not participate in the earth...

hear me out first: that very day at 3p, the lights went literally out, blackout, and we went to the mall to have some cold air because it was super hot, when we went back home, it was still dark. and until 8:30, no power was restored. we slept early and i could not believe it, until 7 am the following day, no power yet...

i called up the electric office, and after a minute, there goes the light... for 17 long hours...

SandyCarlson said...

I love what you've done here. These shots are wonderful. We doused the lights, too. It's a good thing that makes me think of how little electricity I need to get by.

that explains the re-routing on the highway fronting MOA. they had the earth hour program there.suprisingly our street neighborsparticipate in earth hour by turning off the street lamp for an hour.

Cza said...

you were there! inggit ako! :P I wanted to go to MOA too but ended up in greenbelt na lang. Nice pics! I'm really glad Earht Hour was such a success. :)

>hi chubs, sayang naman. next year na lang.

>john, i hope you'll have a great time in the philippines. thanks too for dropping by.

>redlan, sana nga kasi isang purpose naman nito ay awareness to do it more often and not just for one day. kakatuwa naman ang gospel.

>bryan, galing ah. malamang hindi pa nga earth hour ang tawag nung time na yon dahil nung 2007 sa australia pa lang yata.

>hi rebecca, happy earth day! thanks.

>hi hilda, hehehe... siguro kailangan na rin ng publicity for awareness. maganda yung ginawa sa cebu dahil ginamitan ng solar panels para sa ginamit na kuryente during the earth hour event.

>hi reena, hopefully next year mas marami ng magpaparticipate. na improve na nga ito compared to last year and pilipinas na rin ang nagtop sa buong mundo in terms of support. not bad for philippines.

yung tshirt kinuha ko lang sa isang tao na nasa harap namin.

>dennis, salamat. mahirap nga kasi wala akong tripod kaya ang ibang kuha blurry. happy earth day.

>gillboard, you did conserved your energy. dont know if that counts. hehehe... yes may next year pa naman.

>l.reis, we did. partly because we were not at home so all the lights were off. it's good to know that you also participated.

>hi carver, thanks! it's good to know that you also supported earth hour this year. every year more and more cities and countries participate.

>sidney, i see it more of an awareness campaign more than just saving energy. but in one way this somewhat reduce consumption specially with those big manufacturing plants who decided to participate this year.

i hope that they'll do more ad campaigns every now and then.

so using your computer was really irresistible.

>hi sheng, maybe the city officials there made it a mass participation to the earth hour. hehehe... let's call that earth hours.

>hi sandy, great! it's good to know that more and more people participate in this awareness campaign. that's a nice realization. i hope others get to realize that too.

>theonoski, yes. the stage was set up infront of the globe so they made a re-routing scheme.

your neighbor made a really good move.

>hi cza, thanks! sayang we could have met there. im sure the greenbelt area also participated in this campaign.

Very encouraging way to observe Earth Hour. Though there was campaign for it, this was not much celebrated in UAE. This is one of the moments that I wished I am in the Philippines (particularly in MOA) that day. Thanks for sharing.

Nice shots! The Earth Hour is an interesting and useful event indeed. I must say here it has been a bit neglected.

Unknown said...

wow, you were at the MoA for the Earth Hour! i slept through it...but i left instructions to turn off the lights at 8:30 to 9:30. in our neighborhood, according to my landlady, only 3 houses turned off their lights last Saturday night. wala silang paki!

aquamarine said...

we also participated by turning of our lights and went out for dinner.although some HK companies pledged to participate, many were on business as usual..we were at the central business district, i have no idea whether the residential areas joined in..

i'm so glad that philippines has one of the largest turn out in this event.

i hope people doesn't stop here. but continue finding and doing ways to save our planet from destruction.

i have not traveled the whole planet. and have not seen it's beauty.

i hope we people do our share to preserve it.

So impressive and so encouraging that the cause has really taken effect. Meanwhile, it was simply joined by homeowners here in the province by turning off their lights too. Cousins were gathered by the porch with some chips, cold drinks while small cousins play around the yard. :)

Was having dinner at a Korean resto in Makati when the Korean owner came to our table and lit two candles. We were expecting them to turn the lights out shortly... but they never did. He just came back after a half hour, blew the candles and took 'em back with him. labo. :D

Hay, I would've loved to be there! My boyfriend works ina coffee shop at MoA. and they, too, turned off most of their lights, leaving just enough to keep the store running.
